Cover Art - "Tender Morsels" by Margo Lanagan

Last year when I read the blurb of Margo Lanagan’s “Tender Morsels” I was very curious about this novel.

TENDER MORSELS is a dark and vivid story, set in two worlds and worrying at the border between them. Liga lives modestly in her own personal heaven, a world given to her in exchange for her earthly life. Her two daughters grow up in this soft place, protected from the violence that once harmed their mother. But the real world cannot be denied forever - magicked men and wild bears break down the borders of Liga's refuge. Now, having known Heaven, how will these three women survive in a world where beauty and brutality lie side by side?

My interest increased after I read the interview made by Jeff VanderMeer for Clarkesworld Magazine with Margo Lanagan, but for reasons that remain a mystery to me I didn’t bought the book yet. However, all the worse is for the better now, because David Fickling Books will release a new hardcover edition of “Tender Morsels” on July and which feature a cover artwork made by Caniglia. If I am totally honest I wasn’t fond of any of the covers made for this novel so far, but this one is a different thing. I like it quite a lot, as I like the art of Caniglia.

I'd had my eyes set on the book since I read a short story that caused a little blogosphere stir - ZOMG a story with children and sex! - and which turned out to be great. But I know what's kept me from buying this yet: my hatred for hardcovers. It should be out in paperback by the time I make my new order though.. yay.

This new cover certainly has a different feel from any of the previous editions. Truth be told, I find it a little scary, but based on what I've read I think it does a good job of capturing the book's feel.

I think this cover is MUCH more appropriate than the one I saw of it -- a fairytale like watercolor of a girl hugging a bear. If I had seen the book with this cover I would have a much better idea of what was between the pages.

I really dislike the cover & blurb that Knopf used -- I think it is false marketing.(This one:

Jen, I know that you don't like hardcovers, but this cover is for a hardback as well :) I haven't read any of Margo Lanagan's works, but I heard a lot of them. Some controversies too.

Memory, it is a little darker, but a very good one :)

Voter Mom, I didn't like that cover either. And I believe that this one gives a better idea about the book. I read your thoughts on the book too and I have to admit that they stirred my interest further on :)

Oooh, what a great cover :) I thank you very much, Dark Wolf, for linking to all the awesome artists whose works and covers you show in your blog. As you may already know from malazanempire, I'm very interested in these things and am always excited to discover an artist I haven't known yet, and great cover art is kind of worth dying for, as far as I'm concerned [we have so little good cover art - if any - here in Germany :(]. I'd never have though about reading this book based on the blurb, it's the cover that makes me want to read it, haha.

The cover is amazing. It's rare to see one of those covers that haunts your dreams and makes you wonder if you're brave enough to read it. Thanks for showing this.

Puck, I know what you mean, we suffer here from bad cover art too. So little of them give me an eye catchy feeling. For me a good cover art is very important, for the new authors they catch my eyes when I'm on a library, for the authors I know they add to the pleasure of my reading :)

Julie, you are quite right, the cover dares us to read it :) And Caniglia is an amazing artist.
